acciodog:

isn’t it cool how some phobias are unquestioned and considered “normal”, like fear of heights or spiders, but mention that you have social anxiety or a fear of driving and people immediately jump to “why? what’s so scary about that? that makes no sense??????” and by it’s cool i mean it’s really fucked up because all phobias are irrational it doesn’t need an explaination that’s what makes it a pHOBIA

There’s this concept called ‘preparedness’ in which our evolutionary history has prepared us to be particularly sensitive to biologically relevant stimuli like dangerous animals and situations, so a lot more people are likely to be more phobic of things like spiders and heights (dangerous animals/situations) than things like social anxiety and driving, which is probably why people (unconsciously) think it’s normal to be scared of spiders and heights but not social anxiety and driving. But yeah I agree it’s fucked up.
